Books Censorship in Brazilian Military Dictatorship

For four years (until the AI-5 law was made), the censorship in the Brazilian dictatorship was lowkey confused, because it had almost no standards for its own application. Between those four years, the main aim was the editor Enio Silveira, who also owned an book editor named “Editora civilização Brasileira”), we must remember that in dictatorship the censorship is used as a weapon for domination by coercion, where the action of blocking the speech’s freedom were allowed by the National State.

The beginning of book’s censorship

Before the promulgation of the 1967 constitution, during the four years leading up to it, political censorship was frequently employed in Brazil. As part of an anti-censorship initiative, the "Editora Civilização Brasileira" took action by filing a security mandate against the Department of Public Security of the Federation (DFSP in Portuguese). Following the establishment of the military dictatorship's constitution in 1967, state censorship was formalized as a federal government activity.
