Metabolic Insights: UC San Diego Study Reveals Link Between Cell Metabolism and Depression
Scientists at the University of California (UC) San Diego School of Medicine have revealed a groundbreaking link between cell metabolism and depression, challenging traditional views of depression as solely a mental disorder. Using metabolomics, the study examined blood chemistry in 99 patients with treatment-resistant depression and suicidal thoughts. The findings identified distinct metabolic markers for depression and suicide risk, differing between men and women. This prompts a reevaluation of our understanding of depression. Led by UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers, the study's metabolomics methodology allows for a comprehensive analysis of blood biochemicals, holding potential for diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.
