Perpetuating Safety or the Cycle of Repression?

The newest 'Pink Seat' feature launched by Indigo Airlines amidst the vast array of incidents of groping, touching, harassing, and urinating that took place in Air India, any unwelcoming behavior towards women by males is seen as a step forward. But is it in the right direction?


According to this feature, the website allows women to be aware of the sex of other passengers on the flight. It lets them choose appropriate seating according to their preference for seat partners. From the point of view of women, this will significantly reduce the anxiety of anticipated unwarranted experiences, but temporarily.


What about comfort?

The simple freedom of wanting to, book a window or aisle seat, just because one might want to enjoy the view or want more leg space, now becomes an opportunity cost, a huge one. Do we then prioritize safety or luxury, when luxury forms the literal basis of air travel and should not be a choice?
