Tetrachromacy is a disorder in which an individual has four types of color receptors in their eyes rather than the typical three. These extra color receptors, known as cone cells, allow humans to see a greater range of colors, including some that are not visible to the naked eye. Because of the inheritance pattern of the involved genes, the condition is prevalent in females.Tetrachromacy may be traced back to a genetic abnormality on the X chromosome, which contains the genes for color vision. This mutation results in the existence of an additional cone cell that detects light at a different wavelength. As a result, tetrachromats recognise colors that trichromatic people cannot.
