The Recent Gas Leak in Iran

A gas explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran has killed at least 51 workers, state media reported Sunday. The blast occurred in South Khorasan province’s Madanjoo mine in Tabas, about 540 km southeast of Tehran, at 21:00 local time on Saturday. The explosion, caused by a methane gas leak, affected two blocks where 69 miners worked—22 in block C and 47 in block B. More than 20 others were injured. Rescue operations are underway, but how many are still trapped remains unclear. The death toll was revised from an earlier estimate of 30 dead.
