Tofu-dreg projects- Where buildings go 'Soft' on Safety!

In the Chinese-speaking world, "Tofu-dreg projects" describe poorly constructed structures, drawing a metaphor from the remnants of tofu production to signify subpar workmanship. Corruption is a root cause, diverting project funds away from materials and skilled labour. Often, contracts are granted based on political ties rather than qualifications, compromising structural integrity. Recent incidents, such as the gym roof collapse in Qiqihar, exemplify the serious safety concerns. While the Chinese Government has occasionally played down such issues, a growing public awareness and demand for accountability may prevent them from sweeping the problem under the rug, prompting efforts to address these issues more thoroughly.
