Understanding the Monkeysphere: An Exploration of Cognitive Limits in Social Relationships

The monkeysphere emphasizes our limited capacity to care about individuals outside our immediate social circle. Research shows that humans can only maintain meaningful connections with about 150 people, with whom we feel empathy and strive to build strong relationships.

Cognitive limitations present challenges, but they are no excuse for complacency. Instead, it serves as a call to action, urging us to strive for a more compassionate society where we can question nature's empathy. Expanding our monkey sphere requires a conscious effort to recognize the value of all sentient beings. An inclusive society relies on compassion toward animals, nature, and strangers.
