Williams' and Wilmore's Delayed Stay in Space
On 5th June 2024, Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore took off into space aboard the Boeing Starliner for its maiden 8 day mission. But failures with the capsule's manoeuvring thrusters, coupled with helium leaks, deemed the spacecraft unsafe for its journey back to Earth, leading to the astronauts becoming stranded in space with no fixed date of return. The pair is currently residing in the International Space Station, alongside the regular 7 member crew, with the Starliner docked to the ISS for over 75 days now. With $1.5bn over budget, and an attempt to save NASA's Commercial Crew Program, will Boeing and NASA get our astronauts back?
